Who We Are

Our Story

Welcome to Ama Sushi, a delicious addition to 50th & France's exciting dining scene. Similar to its award-winning sister restaurant in Northeast Minneapolis, Momo Sushi, Ama offers a unique combination of Tibetan and Japanese fare. "Ama" means "mother" in the Tibetan language, and in this case, it's truly a family affair with brothers Sonam Nyorie and Rinpo Yak teaming up to serve artfully crafted dishes at affordable prices.

Sonam and Rinpo are Tibetan immigrants who came to the US over a decade ago to live the American dream. Ama honors the cuisine of their homeland, while also drawing on Sonam's skills as a sushi chef — a craft he developed working in multiple sushi restaurants on the east coast and in the Twin Cities. The brother's started their entrepreneurial journey together years ago, running popular food truck Volcano Hibachi. Rinpo closely consulted on the development of Momo Sushi and now the Sonam and Rinpo are partnered on Ama -- making the family business official.
